"Colors of Summer" Poems
Written by Mrs. Dingman's 5th Grade
September 2010
Figurative language creates clear and compelling images. We chose our favorite color word associations for the season of summer for this writing project and used a rough draft organizer to help us begin to think about things we associated with those colors, using our 5 senses. We worked our way through the writing process, beginning with preparing a rough draft, revising to make our writing clearer or more interesting, and illustrating our final edited copies. We reviewed nouns and adjectives, discussed phrases, and identified similes in our writing.

We had a brief introduction to research skills as well as we searched Crayola.com for clearer and more interesting color word choices, choosing a Crayola box favorite.

We made excellent use of the technology available to us in the classroom. Rough drafts were prepared using Microsoft’s Word. We practiced using the Spell Check Tool, experimented with font color for the text of our poems, and were introduced to the Bold Tool. We are quickly building confidence and independent comfort using our laptops.

This writing project aligned with the following Pennsylvania Academic Standards:
1.2.5 Reading Critically in All Content Areas
1.3.5 Reading, Analyzing and Interpreting Literature
1.4.5 Types of Writing
1.5.5 Quality of Writing
1.8.5 Research
3.2.5 Inquiry and Design

Colors of Summer

Summer is robin egg blue
like the clear sky floating above our heads
a shiny bicycle being ridden in the streets
and a huge raft floating in the water

Summer is screamin green
like a tiny leaf flying in the nice breeze
a sprouting hedge blooming little flowers
and the thin grass that has just been cut

Summer is laser lemon
like the bright sun shining our day
a beautiful dress flowing in the light breeze
and a gigantic sunflower growing with joy

Summer is scarlet
like a soaring cardinal flying happily being free
a calming sunset giving us its amazement
and a raging campfire warming our hands

Summer is the colors of Crayola!

Colors of Summer

Summer is indigo
like a frigid pool swirling like a whirlpool
a warm ocean chopping the sand
and a murky pond sitting calmly

Summer is spring green
like a baking blade of grass swaying in the wind
a thick bush as hot as a frying pan
and a tiny leaf as small as a toe

Summer is red orange
like a beautiful sunset as pretty as a pansy
a delicious apple too large to bite
and a hot cheek as warm as the ocean

Summer is laser lemon
like a blooming flower not that big
an awesome boogie-board as fun as a roller coaster
and a tasty piece of corn stuck in between your teeth

Summer is amazingly colorful

Colors of Summer

Summer is electric lime
like a miniscule cricket hopping on one foot
the bright grass swaying in the breeze
and the spacious woods filled with animals

Summer is cerulean
like the stretching sky filled with clouds
the humongous ocean with dolphins out
and a freezing ice pop that gives you a brain freeze

Summer is scarlet
like a fragrant rose that attracts people by its smell
a colorful crayon made completely of wax
and a crisp apple sweet and ready to eat

Summer is laser lemon
like the shining sun making us get cold water
a scrumptious banana with a slippery peel
and a giant umbrella that shades us from the sun

Summer is the best season ever!

Colors of Summer

Summer is pink
like a juicy watermelon as a snack
a bouncy ball hopping its way to China
and a gallon of sour lemonade shocking me

Summer is robin egg blue
like a round berry so delicious
a fluffy cotton candy like a cloud
and a sharp tack holding a bike in the air

Summer is burnt sienna
like a crunchy pistachio making a cracking sound
a solid house baking in the sun
and a plastic fan so windy

Summer is laser lemon
like a spiky pineapple stabbing me
a freezing ice pop freezing me
and a dappled car like a bumblebee

Summer is a wonderful season

Colors of Summer

Summer is beaver tan
like a gargantuan beach hotter than the sun
a hefty branch skydiving from a tree
and a fabulous person's tan like a piece of bacon

Summer is outer space black
like a huge bear doing summersaults down a hill
a tropical piece of coal burning in a pit
and a massive turkey vulture gliding over my head

Summer is maroon red
like a delicious apple falling from a tree
a giant woodpecker's head pecking at wood
and a beautiful milk snake slithering in clans

Summer is screaming green
like a sweet fig that flies to the ground
a thick top of a tree more beautiful than flowers
and a thin blade of grass growing out of the ground

Summer is so colorful

Colors of Summer

Summer is sky blue
like a frigid pool that's shivering
the beautiful sky swirling above me
and a comfy towel over my shoulder

Summer is scarlet
like a harsh sunburn that irritates me
a plump apple falling in my basket
and a tiny ant's feet burning on my driveway

Summer is unmellow yellow
like a wondrous sunflower whose petals fall
a delicious fruit that quenches my hunger
and an amazing ice pop that is slowly melting

Summer is white
like a puffy cloud that is changing shapes
a magnificent ice cream bulging with flavor
and a lovely fan that twirls amazingly fast

Summer is my favorite season

Colors of Summer

Summer is denim
like a frigid pool sparkling like a diamond
a roaring ocean sending waves to the shore
and an eternal sky floating overhead

Summer is neon carrot
like a mouthwatering tangerine sitting on a plate
an amazing sunset sinking into the ground
and a glorious monarch fluttering to a flower

Summer is white
like a fluffy cloud roaming in the breeze
a sticky spider web catching flies like a net
and a delicious ice cream melting under the sun

Summer is laser lemon
like a blossoming sunflower reaching for sunlight
a beautiful dandelion popping through the grass
and a spotted banana dancing in my mouth

Summer is a rainbow of many wonderful things
