Color Poems

Figurative language creates clear and compelling images. We chose our favorite color word for this writing project and used a graphic organizer to help us begin to think about things we associate with that color, using our 5 senses. We worked our way through the writing process, beginning with a graphic organizer for pre-writing, preparing a rough draft, revising and editing to make our writing clearer or more interesting, and illustrating our final copies.

We made excellent use of the technology available to us in the classroom. Rough drafts were prepared using Microsoft’s Word, we continued to practice using the Spell Check Tool, experimented with font color for the text of our poems, and were introduced to the Bold Tool. We are quickly building confidence and independent comfort using our computers.

This writing project aligned with the following Pennsylvania Academic Standards:
1.2.5 Reading Critically in All Content Areas
1.3.5 Reading, Analyzing and Interpreting Literature
1.4.5 Types of Writing
1.5.5 Quality of Writing
3.2.5 Inquiry and Design
3.7.5 Technological Devices

Green

Green looks like evenly cut spring grass
It looks like moist moss on a rock
This color looks like slimy seaweed flowing in the water
An alien from another planet looks like this color

Green sounds like an angry hissing snake
It sounds like rustling leaves blowing in the wind
This color sounds like someone cutting overgrown grass
A white tailed deer munching on a meal sounds like this color

Green smells like nature
It smells like a decorated Christmas tree on a winter day
This color smells like green mint chocolate
An oily green crayon smells like this color

Green tastes like veggies fresh from mom’s garden
It tastes like a sour apple lollipop
This color tastes like a freshly picked four leaf clover
A mushy pear in its season tastes like green

Green feels like excitement on a special day
It feels like my life is complete
A lot of the time green feels like calmness
Sometimes it feels like seasickness out on a ship

Green reminds me of writing on a dusty old chalkboard
It reminds me of climbing trees on a sweet sunny day
This color reminds me of cutting grass on an overgrown lawn
The color I chose reminds me of starting the engine at a green traffic light

Red

Red looks like flowers
It looks like the beauty of the fall
It looks like cranberries
Red looks like my folder

Red sounds like a robin calling her babies
It sounds like the ringing of the ornaments on my trees
It sounds like bells on the fireplace
Red sounds like my dogs’ tags on their collars

Red smells like the smoke from the fireplace
It smells like the roses from off the dining room table
It smells like the cinnamon scent of a candle through the entire house
Red smells like fresh chopped peppers

Red tastes like the deliciousness of a strawberry
It tastes like a cherry off a cherry tree
It tastes like an apple off an apple tree
Red tastes like a strawberry ice cream

Red feels like the softness of a winter hat
It feels like the warmness of a winter coat when I am outside in the cold
It feels like the soft fluffiness of a red canary
Red feels like the delicateness of a butterfly

Red reminds me of the beautiful sunset
It reminds me of the wonderfulness of Christmas cheer
It reminds me of apple picking
Red reminds of Christmas stockings hanging on my fireplace

Red

Red looks like fruit punch spilled on my sister’s white shirt
It looks like a fire truck’s paint job
It also looks like my sister’s nail polish
Red looks like a crayon in a box

Red sounds like an alarm after a robber breaks in a bank and steals one million bucks
It makes screaming sounds like police car sirens during a chase
Red reminds me of music sounds like a radio on a Jamaican beach
And, like a smoke detector during a fire

Red smells like roses
It smells like an apple Febreze air freshener in an electrical socket
Red smells like greasy diesel gas smells spilled on the floor
It smells like tire rubber after a drag race

Red tastes like hot sauce on a taco
And Cinnamon… and like minty toothpaste
Red tastes like apple Juicy juice in a barrel
And, like the sweetness of a plum

Red feels good on a hot summer day
It makes me feel anxious before a dirt bike race
Red wrapping paper makes me feel excited on Christmas morning
Red ink makes me feel nervous during a test

Red reminds me of a great bonfire
And big fireworks explosions on the fourth of July
Red dirt reminds me of a great dirt bike race I had
And, like fishing on a huge ship and almost catching a great white shark

Red

Red looks like fire
And like the second line on the clock
It looks like a stripe on the American flag
And like a stop light

Red sounds like a fire drill bell
And it sounds like an explosion
Red also sounds like sparks
And like fireworks

Red smells like raspberries
And like cherry pie
Red smells like cherries
Red smells like strawberries

Red tastes like an apple
And it tastes like fruit punch
And it does taste like barbacue sauce
Red tastes like peppers

Red feels generous
And feels excited
And feels curious
Red feels anxious

Red reminds me of a fire in my house in New York
It reminds me of blood
Red also reminds me of July with fireworks
And red reminds me of coloring with crayon

Yellow

Yellow looks like the fluorescent sun
It can look like my bright marker
Or, like my folder
Yellow can look like my eraser

Yellow sounds like the trees blowing

Or, like hay fields growing
Yellow sounds like leaves falling off the bright trees

Yellow smells like beautiful lemon candles
It can smell like smelly stickers
Or, smell like food that just got baked

It can taste like a soft banana
Or, taste like just baked banana bread
Yellow can taste like a lemon or like a yellow pepper

Yellow can feel very delightful
It can make me feel joyful
Or, it can also make me feel grateful
Yellow can make me feel happy

Yellow reminds me of some of my yellow tank tops
It can remind me of some of my socks
Or, it can also remind me of yellow ducks
Yellow can remind me of my three beautiful pairs of flip-flops
