Mrs. Dingman's 5th Grade Has!
Character Poems
February 2007
We were invited by the Pike County Courier to submit poetry for their Children's 2007 edition. The assignment for 5th grade students asked children to "write a poem that describes a character you recently read about. Include adjectives and a description that paints a clear picture of your character."

We continue to develop a wide variety in our reading tastes. Genre and author preference guide our selection in our enthusiastic search for independent reading material. Enjoy our Character Poems!
This project aligned with the following Pennsylvania Academic Standards:
1.1.5 Learning to Read Independently
1.4.5 Types of Writing
1.5.5 Quality of Writing
3.7.5 Technological Devices

George is Getting Small, Smaller, and More Small

George
wonderful, puny, playful
Who loves his parents and little brother
Who feels small about a dream he had
Who needs to figure out a way to get big again
Who shares toys with his brother
Who fears that the cat will eat him
Who'd like to see the cat get scared
Who dreams of getting big
Who ends up having a dream and wakes up and is tangled in his blankets

The Delectable Life of the Red-legged Tarantula

The Red-legged Tarantula
Reddish-orange, sable, docile
Who loves to eat bugs and insects
Who feels scared about getting devoured by a tarantula wasp
Who needs to make or find a home or burrow
Who shares food with his accompaniment
Who fears predators or enemies
Who'd like to see food wandering by
Who dreams of having a better reputation
Who ends up being the hunter who becomes the hunted

A Poem About Hank Zipzer, My Favorite Character

Hank Zipzer
Hilarious, different, embarrassed
Who loves his dog Cheerio
Who feels embarrassed about his learning challenges
Who needs help with his schoolwork
Who shares a clubhouse with his best friends and a really annoying neighbor
Who fears his sister's pet iguana
Who'd like to see any player on the Met's baseball team
Who dreams of being smart and likes people without learning challenges
Who ends up way in the middle of the ocean on a ship because he could not tie a knot correctly

Who feels good about fighting crime
Who needs a diaper and a cape to fly
Who shares super powers
Who fears nothing
Who'd like to see himself pummel every villain in the world
Who dreams of destroying the world
Who ends up almost forfeiting but comes back and ends up in a triumph
