The school district in which I taught and tutored adopted Wonders as its K-5 ELA Program
beginning with the 2015-2016 school year.
So… I thought about blending the ideas
of teaching with fidelity… and… teaching with integrity
to give students the ELA word recognition, word analysis skills practice and independent reading and listening experiences
I believed would be to their benefit
and
meet our state’s Core ELA Standards
I used the Scope and Sequence provided by Wonders
in the order and pacing in which we were asked to use them
supplementing and complementing classroom instruction for students I taught and students I tutored
with activities I created.
Early in my teaching career, a very wise building administrator told me:
“In the classroom, you should be teaching the standards, not the textbook your administration has given you.
As a teacher, you should be trusted to use your judgment
to determine what will help meet your student’s needs to learn those standards.
You will need to pick and choose from a variety of sources to do that.”
Those words help guide me every year.
These classroom and tutor-tested activities were created by me to supplement and complement the Wonders program,
serving as companion resources for the 2014, 2017, 2020, and 2023 editions.
